What to Wear for your Professional Headshots
Colors
While you may be tempted to go with black and white, adding a pop
of color can really make you stand out. If you prefer to stay neutral, choosing a textured fabric can add interest to your portrait, as well.
Neutrals and Jewel Tones are always best for portraits.
(Bright Red and Orange do not photograph true-to-color.)
Suit Jacket?
This is totally up to you (or your employer). Though I'm told, if you wear a suit coat, you must wear a tie. If you wear a blazer or sports coat, you do not need one. You should consider your audience when deciding. (And about that neck tie - unless it's your "brand",
don't go with a crazy pattern.)
Neckline
This is mostly for women. Most headshots are head and shoulders, so be sure your shirt will show up when cropped. This means, crew neck, boat neck, and narrow v-necks work best. Anything low cut may not show in your portrait. Also, avoid cap sleeves and sleeveless shirts, unless you have buff arms you'd like to show off. No turtlenecks, no busy patterns, and usually no shiny fabrics.
Fit & Haircuts
Please try on your outfits ahead of time. Ill-fitting clothes don't look professional. Also, have your hair done 3-4 days ahead of time, so it has time to adjust and lay properly.
Final Tips
Unless solid white, big jewelry, or bold prints are part of your brand, avoid them. Classic and simple is best for headshots.
You may want to bring your clothes and get dressed at the shoot to avoid wrinkles from seatbelts (please).
Men, check your facial hair. Unruly eyebrows, nose hairs, neck hairs, and 5 o'clock shadows are hard to impossible to edit.
Eyeglasses - if you usually wear them, you'll want them in your portrait. Non-glare is always best, but we can help avoid glare. Also, if you wear transitions lenses, keep them out of the sun before your shoot.
